The Movie Itself: Our Reviewer's Take Surprisingly more engaging and stimulating than the recent slew of YA adaptations flooding theaters of late — with a couple exceptions, of course, such as ' and ' — 'The Maze Runner' is essentially a re-imagining of William Golding's Nobel Prize-winning classic Lord of the Flies. Although not on the same level of intellectual subtext or embracing allegorical themes about human nature with any genuine seriousness, which could be argued as a drawback and possibly to its detriment, the film nonetheless touches on concerns of civil order, power struggles between adolescents and the tension of groupthink mentality, however mildly. Granted, the script by television producer Noah Oppenheim, Grant Pierce Myers and T.S. Nowlin, based on James Dashner's novel, ultimately shrinks away from such topics, backsliding to the central mystery about the giant concrete walls surrounding the boys. Thankfully, this is not an altogether bad thing, however, because the movie's strongest success comes from trying to solve that conundrum, of seeking answers to the riddle of why the boys are there while also solving the maze without dying. This is even at the cost of risking the almost idyll-like community the group has diligently worked at establishing for the last three years. Of course, the boys never felt any reason for jeopardizing their pastoral commonwealth dubbed the 'Glade,' other than sending the occasional 'Runner' for mapping the intimidating labyrinth. That is not until the newest member Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) comes along, disrupting an ill-conceived harmony with his curiosity, skepticism and an unexplained determination to challenge and explore the maze for himself. True to Golding's influence, even if only a coincidental correlation, Thomas is the benevolent and selfless Ralph, down to his willingness and perceived lack of fear investigating the Maze and the horrible creatures residing within. Those beasts, called Grievers, are mechanical, bug-like, bloodthirsty monsters which apparently keep guard at night, making the solution and possible exit all the more challenging because according several others, no one survives the night if trapped inside. Regardless, Thomas refuses to accept his situation as his final fate, taking a gamble in order to rescue two boys and manages to kill one of the Grievers, learning more in a couple days than any other in years. This raises tensions among the group, particularly with Gally (Will Poulter of 'We're the Millers' and 'Son of Rambow' fame) who seems to have been itching to take charge after designated leader Alby (Aml Ameen) falls ill. The Maze Runner Blu-ray (2014): Starring Dylan O'Brien, Aml Ameen and Ki Hong Lee. Thomas wakes up in an elevator, remembering nothing but his own name. His opposition, however, is the smaller but seemingly wiser Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), the true second-in-command who clearly wants to maintain peace yet finds Thomas's probing determination infectious enough to bend the rules. Like lab rats under constant observation, which is not too far off from the truth without also being a spoiler, how the boys tackle and cope with their predicament is ultimately the real test — the predictable core of the plot one can easily guess from the previews. And to spice things up, both as a convenient device as well as a method for adding mystery, the story throws in Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), the only female while also the last member of the Glades who curiously knows Thomas. Though her inclusion seems meant to only hurry up the pace, 'The Maze Runner' offers just enough thrills and excitement with a central mystery that's genuinely engaging. Despite the somewhat frustratingly cliffhanger twist that seeds more questions, ensuring audiences will return for the second installment, director Wes Ball makes a strong full-length feature debut by keeping the tension between the boys fundamental and the CG visuals a supplemental aspect to an already agreeable story. The Blu-ray: Vital Disc Stats 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment brings 'The Maze Runner' to Blu-ray as two-disc combo pack with a flyer for a Digital HD Copy. The Region Free, BD50 disc sits comfortably opposite a DVD-9 inside a blue, eco-cutout case with a glossy slipcover. The package also includes promos for other books by James Dashner, special codes for the videogame version and an exclusive 24-page color comic book. A couple skippable trailers kick things off before switching to the standard menu screen with full-motion clips and music playing in the background. The dystopian actioner makes a mad dash for Blu-ray with a top-notch 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode that astounds with lots of details and rich clarity. Shot on a variety of HD cameras, the freshly-minted transfer shows clean distinct lines in the rugged clothing of the characters, the wooden huts, the surrounding foliage and along the grey stone walls of the maze. Rust marks on the concrete structure are plainly visible while pores and negligible blemishes in the cast are exposed. The color palette is intentionally on the drab and limited side, true to the photographic style of Enrique Chediak, yet primaries come through accurately and boldly. Brightness and contrast are very well-balanced with crisp, brilliant whites and deep, penetrating blacks that allow plenty of visibility in the darkest portions. Overall, the 2.40 image is excellent near-reference quality. The sci-fi thriller debuts on home video with a superb and awesomely effective DTS-HD MA soundtrack guaranteed to demonstrate the capabilities of one's system. Rear activity is simply phenomenal, delivering a wealth of atmospherics that discrete and consistent right from the start. The wind blows through the trees in the distance, the faint subtle sounds of movement in the maze disturb the obvious silence of the Glade, and the voices of the boys when gathering in a crowd surround the listener. When exploring the maze, the wind is noticeably and creepily hollow, echoes bounce of the large concrete slabs, and the walls adjust with frightening aggressiveness and presence. Most exciting is hearing the clicking or the metallic stomping of the Grievers convincingly panning all around, creating a terrifically immersive 360° soundfield. In the front soundstage, the lossless mix generates a wall of sound from the moment we see Thomas riding the elevator to the top. The loud, rackety sounds of grinding metal, cans bumping into each other and air swooshing downward are plainly heard with credible realism off-screen. Throughout the rest of the runtime, imaging remains broad and spacious with outstanding balance and fluid movement between the channels. Dynamic range exhibits clean separation between the mids and highs, allowing the unique stomp of the Grievers on concrete an impressive sense of presence. Although it doesn't actively dig deep, the low-end is equally noteworthy for providing the action, especially when related to the maze, with striking weight and impact. With excellent dialogue reproduction in the center, the movie arrives with reference audio. • Audio Commentary — Director Wes Ball is joined by co-writer T.S. Nowlin for an easy-going and fairly informative conversation about the production while also sharing a few insights into their creative process. • Navigating the Maze (HD, 43 min) — Five-part making-of doc that covers the usual aspects of the production, from the process of adapting the book and stage design to digital effects and choreography, mixed with interviews of the cast and crew. • Visual Effects (HD, 34 min) — Broken into two parts though discussing essentially the same thing, fans can compare the finished product with its pre-effects counterpart. The first and longer piece also includes an optional commentary track from the director. • 'Ruin' (HD, 9 min) — With optional commentary track, this is the short film that landed Wes Ball the job, and is offered in both 2D and surprisingly good 3D with excellent depth and lots of fun gimmick shots. • The Chuck Diaries (HD, 6 min) — Showing the process and route star Blake Cooper, who plays Chuck, took for landing the role. • Deleted Scenes (HD) — With optional commentary tracks. • Gag Reel (HD) • Still Galleries (HD) • Trailer (HD).

It is the new movie directed by Ziad Doueiri and tells the story of Toni a Christian Lebanese who got into a fight from an insult blown out with a Palestinian plumber. Haunted by their past and the civil war, they went really far with it and the movie took unexpected turns and surprises. Doueiri and Touma wrote a splendid courtroom drama script that is really tense, exciting and really fair for the two sides. It reminded me of the great Sidney Lumet movies with a touch of political background. That film has great characters rich with backup stories and it wouldn't be great without the marvelous cast. Each actors gave an Oscar worthy performance. Thumbs up for Karam, Hayek and Diamand Bou Abboud. I must give credits to Camille Salemeh because he led the show for sure! Doueiri worked hard on letting the actors give their best for the characters. Cinematography and score were also on a high level here! Doueiri is a superb director. His debut West Beirut has always been every Lebanese's favorite. The Insult was competing in Venice (It won best actor for Kamel Basha and had a 5 minutes standing ovation), Telluride, TIFF and it the official submission for Lebanon at the Oscars for best foreign language movie. Daring, bold and smart, this movie is big step forward for the Lebanese cinema. Dec 31, 2017 The next video is starting stop. With: Dylan O'Brien, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kaya Scodelario, Giancarlo Esposito, Rosa Salazar, Aidan Gillen, Walton Goggins, Ki Hong Lee, Barry Pepper, Will Poulter, Patricia Clarkson. Rated PG-13 2 hours 22 minutes The past few years have been a rather dystopian era for dystopian YA film adaptations. After “The Hunger Games” became a genuine phenomenon, studios went on a spending spree, scouring increasingly indistinguishable tales of chosen ones and oppressive government regimes for potential franchises, with decidedly mixed results. Ever since Jennifer Lawrence called time on Katniss, “Divergent” has fizzled out rather ignominiously; “Ender’s Game” and “The 5th Wave” proved to be nonstarters; and after a delayed production that saw series lead Dylan O’Brien injured in an on-set accident, “,” the third and final entry in Fox’s adaptations of James Dashner’s books, finally arrives this month with relatively little fanfare. Somewhat surprisingly, however, “Maze Runner’s” core team – including original series director – have rallied to give this once middling saga a proper sending-off. Downplaying some of the property’s sillier elements when not jettisoning them entirely, and streamlining the narrative into a rousing and at times even emotional action film, “Death Cure” is the most successful entry in the franchise by far. It may be too late to turn the cultural tide on the genre, but it comes as a relief to see at least one series manage to stick the landing. More Reviews Perhaps mindful that the film is unlikely to attract many newcomers at this point, “Death Cure” devotes almost no time to catching audiences up on the events of 2014’s “The Maze Runner” and 2015’s “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.” For those with short memories, our hero Thomas (O’Brien) is still hard at work fighting an evil, quasi-governmental agency known as WCKD, which imprisoned him and a slew of comparably good-looking youngsters in a monster-filled labyrinth called “The Glade” in the first film, then pursued them across a harsh desert wasteland in the second. They did this as part of a needlessly complicated strategy to fight a massive global pandemic known as “The Flare,” which turns the infected into mindless zombie-like creatures called cranks. The poor kids imprisoned in the maze (they call themselves “Gladers”) are immune to the Flare virus’ effects, and WCKD’s head pair of sinister scientists (Aidan Gillen, Patricia Clarkson) subject them to various nefarious procedures to try to extract a cure from their blood. This underlying concept, as revealed at the end of the first film and elaborated upon endlessly in the second, is all exceedingly daft – and the more the series’ mythology expands, the daffier it tends to get. But it’s here that “Death Cure” makes its most surprising choice: it barely concerns itself with the particulars of the whole conspiracy at all. Instead, what we get is essentially an old-school jailbreak movie, and director Ball wastes zero time flexing his action chops, kicking off the film with a solidly executed train robbery sequence. Maze Runner: The Death Cure (also known simply as The Death Cure) is a 2018 American dystopian science fiction action film directed by Wes Ball and written. Jan 16, 2018 Maze Runner: The Death Cure begins its international rollout tomorrow in South Korea, after which it will eventually make its way to US theaters on Jan 26. The robbers in question are Thomas and his trusty Glader buddies Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) and Frypan (Dexter Darden), as well sardonic resistance fighters Brenda (Rosa Salazar) and Jorge (Giancarlo Esposito). Their target is a train full of young prisoners headed to a WCKD facility, among them the group’s captured comrade Minho (Ki Hong Lee). They manage to rescue a car full of kids successfully, but Minho is not among them – he’s been taken to WCKD headquarters in this wasteland’s mythical last bastion of civilization, the appropriately named Last City. The gang all pledge to rescue their friend or die trying. The Last City, which they reach after some rote zombie-fighting, essentially resembles a landlocked Hong Kong, its gleaming skyscrapers surrounded by massive, heavily fortified walls that keep the filthy rabble living in shantytowns below from entering. (“The walls are new – I guess that’s WCKD’s answer to everything,” Esposito’s Jorge says, in one of several moments that seem to draw fairly explicit parallels to the Trump administration.) Inside, Minho is suffering through WCKD’s various laboratory tortures, all carried out by a onetime Glader and previous Thomas love interest-turned-traitor, Teresa (). Struggling to find a way inside, Thomas and company fall in with a mysterious, gruesomely scarred resistance figure (Walton Goggins), as well as an unexpected returning character from the first film. Once they finally breach the city walls, the film comes to life. While “Death Cure’s” sweeping aerial shots still rely on obvious computer graphics, the street-level city scenes are among the series’ most fully realized and effectively designed, from the propaganda videos broadcasting on electric billboards to the half-glimpsed arrests of the suspected infected on teeming street corners. While not as visually resplendent as “The Hunger Games’” Capitol, the Last City is a believable rendering of a post-apocalyptic metropolis, and the care that went into sketching the setting pays off when the city devolves into an all-out warzone in the film’s final act. “Death Cure” can certainly fall victim to overkill – the climax drags out several scenes longer than it has to; the thunderous sound design grows deadening with one explosion after another – and there are more than a few key plot turns that seem to have lost some important context in the transition to the screen. But damned if Ball doesn’t pull off some impressive firefights and last-minute escapes once the action gets humming. “The Maze Runner” was Ball’s first film, and his ability to craft comprehensible setpieces has steadily improved throughout the trilogy. So too have the performances. Salazar once again proves herself to be an action hero in the making, given much more to do here than in “The Scorch Trials,” while Gillen hones his previously ridiculous antagonist into a properly hissable villain. O’Brien – who, to be fair, was rarely asked to do more than look alternately determined and terrified as he dodged countless terrors in the previous films – has noticeably matured as an actor here, and he sells the film’s emotional beats with a good deal of charisma. Brodie-Sangster has his moments, and Scodelario manages to get across a character of more complicated motivations than one usually sees in films of this ilk. Ironically, this cast has finally started to gel into a group you wouldn’t mind spending time with, just as they’re preparing to say goodbye. Well, better late than never. In the young adult movie genre it is rare to find a film that properly explores the grey between 'good' and evil'. The Death Cure does this, and does it beautifully. This movie may not have the best paced plot, or the most logical action/escape scenes, but it has a heart. It doesn't follow a group of heroes who set out to save the world; it follows a group of friends who just want to rescue one of their own, and are willing to put themselves at risk to do it. The main strength of the Death Cure in comparison to the other instalments is its ability to articulate the moral question at the heart of the whole series: Is it right to sacrifice your humanity in order to save lives? The series provides no clear answer, instead allowing the audience to empathise with both the protagonists' and antagonists' motives. Everyone (except maybe Janson) was just doing what they thought to be right. The scenes towards the end of the film, however, do highlight how disenfranchisement, caused as a result of WKCD's actions, can halt any progress and bring about destruction all the faster (a theme perhaps more relevant to the present day than 'the government is evil, let's take it down' i.e. The Hunger Games). Overall the film stays relatively true to the main themes of the novel, with only minor plot adjustments, and is an enjoyable and thought provoking watch. The ending scene is particularly powerful and brought many people in the cinema to tears. Jan 21, 2018 Em Maze Runner: A Cura Mortal. This movie was inspired by the history book Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan by Doug Stanton. The terrorist attacks of 9/11 have just taken place on the World Trade Center and while most of the world is recoiling in shock, the United States military immediately begins working on retaliation. Already at home and planning his civilian life with his family is Captain Mitch Nelson () who, upon seeing the attack live on TV, decides that his just disbanded team must be the first ones to strike back at the enemy in terrorist-controlled Afghanistan. Leaving their disappointed families, and in some cases their wives behind, Nelson’s team, Task Force Dagger, is dropped into Afghanistan to join forces with General Dostum (Navid Negahban) of the Northern Alliance. The team’s mission is to ride with the resistance, identify Taliban forces and then call in U.S. Air support to weaken the enemy enough for the Afghan General’s troops to finish the job. As happens often in war, things don’t always go according to plan. From an alliance made up of ‘warlords’ tenuously held together by their mutual hatred of the Taliban, to a country that historically has been the bane of the Russian army—or, in fact, any outside force attempting to seize control—Captain Nelson and his team will come to realize winning this one may cost all their lives, yet they heroically press forward regardless. “12 Strong” is the true, declassified story behind America’s first strike back in the war on terrorism. The film, however, often lags and is not nearly as compelling as the full story would attest to, although, at times, it does an adequate job of portraying the courage these men faced amidst overwhelming odds. As with most modern war films, the inappropriate content primarily features violence and foul language. Content of concern Violence: Heavy. Men are killed by gunfire, grenades, mortars, missiles and bombs. Bloody victims are shown and several are shot in the head including, a female Afghan teacher who is killed for teaching young girls contrary to the Taliban’s edict. The Taliban leader is also seen interrogating the young girls beforehand, bringing them to tears in the process. Later some Taliban are seen being gunned down by their leader when they attempt to surrender. A suicide bomber is successful in killing those around him and body parts are strewn about in the aftermath. Men are seen vomiting from the cold, and from stress or injuries, and people are also seen on fire during battle. The level of violence is inappropriate for young children, and I urge parents to exercise extreme caution. Language: Heavy. The Lord’s name is taken in vain 30 times—“G*dd**n” (15), J*sus (2), J*sus Chr**t (3), Chr**t (2), “G*d” (7). Vulgar or profane language includes the f-word (34+), “moth*r f***” (3), “sh**” (27), s.o.b. (1), “b*lls” (1), “n*ts” (1), “a**” (5), “a**-h***” (1), “bast**d” (1), “” (1), “” (10) and “p*ss.” Before the mission, one of the wives tells her husband that she will hold off on sex as a lure to bring him home, and he responds with a lewd suggestion. While adult level foul language is common on the battlefield, we should avoid this for the sake of our conscience just as the advises. Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. — Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. —, A possible example of political correctness is the multiple uses of “God” by resident Afghans and the General. For the Muslim, the name of their god is “Allah” and to say otherwise makes it appear as though all worship the same ‘God.’ On the other hand, when a character makes a reference to the “riches” awaiting Muslim men in the after-life, the director may be forgiven for ignoring the sensual and lascivious nature of their blasphemous understanding of paradise. The friendship that these ‘brothers-in-arms’ have is perhaps the most gratifying aspect of the film. Captain Nelson’s team is willing to follow orders to the death if necessary, and their comradery is a testament to their loyalty, which is commended in. Greater has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. — but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. — Unfortunately, the film does not show how Nelson’s team came to respect him so much, nor is any backstory provided on any of the other characters. A welcome addition to the film would’ve been a look back at either Sgt. Sam’s past or that of his Chief Warrant Officer Hal, played with gravitas. The most interesting bond during the film, however, has to be the one we see developing between the American Captain and the Afghan General. Just as present day Arab nations and Israel share a common father, (see ), the same God made a way for all people to be called His children through in,. For God so the world, that he gave his only begotten, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have. — Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. — Final Thoughts The straightforward way in which the film unfolds may have been realistic for a military operation, but it makes for a less than captivating story. The telling of this first chapter in the war is a long overdue one, but aside from some good moments and an admittedly powerful final act, “12 Strong” misses the mark on what had the potential to be a great war film. |
